This past December, my soul sister Sage told me about her newest album, Art Angels. A few weeks ago I got an itch to listen to it, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat ever since. (I usually don’t listen to albums in their entirety so this is a big deal to me.)
The main song I’ve been playing repeatedly is “Realiti.” Turns out Grimes filmed the video for it while she was touring in Asia in 2013. Where was I when she played in Hong Kong? I was SLEEPIN’. At least I’m awake now.
Yeah, Asia rules.
And then there’s this three-part Act she released. Acts I and II, “Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream,” was filmed at Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo (a dream of mine to visit). It’s tennis meets fallen angel meets Baroque Rococo meets gamer meets Tarantino cowgirl. And blood.
Act III, “Kill V. Maim” is a cyber NY club kid version of Mad Max. (And way more blood.) This is another repeat song too. So much aggro energy!
I promptly watched “Mad Max: Fury Road” after this. 4½ stars out of 5.
Art Angel also features rad guest vocals: Janelle Monae on “Venus Fly” and Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes—who raps entirely in Mandarin—on “SCREAM.”
If you like dancing and femme pop lyrics, give Art Angels a listen. Happy year of the monkey! ✌
